Volunteer in Guatemala

Ak’ Tenamit’s project site in Guatemala counts on international professional volunteers to help accomplish its mission. The number of volunteers working at the project varies from time to time, but a reasonable estimate is 8 volunteers involved at various levels.

Ak’ Tenamit prefers a minimum commitment of six months, or three months as a clinic volunteer, and a working knowledge of Spanish. Volunteers receive board (a small room in the volunteer “galera”) and food (three meals a day, seven days a week consisting in rice, beans and tortillas), but are responsible for their travel to and from Guatemala and for any personal expenses.

Ak’ Tenamit is currently looking for volunteers to fill the following positions:

  • Doctor/Nurse: Attend patients in the primary care clinic and participate in medical excursions to remote indigenous villages to provide consultations. Candidates must have completed their education (medical/nursing license) and have at least two years of working experience in the field. A minimum 3 month commitment and a moderate to high-level of Spanish fluency are required.
  • Dentist: Attend patients in our floating dental clinic and participate in medical excursions to remote indigenous villages to provide consultations. Candidates must have completed their education (dental license) and have at least two years of working experience in the field. A minimum 3 month commitment is required and a moderate to high-level of Spanish fluency are required.
  • English Teacher: Teach basic concepts of grammar and conversation to middle and high school students; classes are co-taught as this benefits both students and teachers. Candidates must have a teaching degree (either BA or MA), preferably with experience in TEFL, and minimum two years of working experience in the field. A minimum 6 month commitment (prefer those who can volunteer for the entire school year January-October) and a moderate level of Spanish fluency are required.
  • Volunteer and Group Coordinator: Coordinate the arrival and stay of volunteers and volunteer groups. This also includes collaborating with the Communications Coordinator in the development of flyers, newsletters, and other various media communications as well as responsible for updating the AAT blog. Candidates must have completed their education (BA degree) and have at least two years of working experience in either one of the following areas: logistics, human resources, administration, and communications within NGO’s. A minimum 6 month commitment and moderate to high level of English and Spanish fluency are required.
  • Communications Coordinator: Responsible for managing the publication of our various media communications including newsletters/e-newsletters, flyers, website, and other promotional materials. Candidates must have a degree in Communications or related field (BA degree) and minimum two years of working experience in the field as well as knowledge of various software (i.e. Publisher and Microsoft Access). Must also be available to travel frequently between Guatemala City and the project. A minimum commitment of 6 months and a high level of both English and Spanish are required.
  • Liaison and Grant writer: Act as liaison between The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund (GTF) and Ak’ Tenamit in regards to implementing a strategy and annual plan to manage funds. This also includes writing grants, cultivating relationships with donors, and securing funding. Candidates must have completed their education (BA degree) and minimum one year working experience in fundraising or comparable experience in other areas are required. Background in international development and/or not-for-profit organizations is preferred. Must also be available to travel frequently between Guatemala City, the project, and other parts of Guatemala. A high level of both English and Spanish required.
  • Grant writer: Elaborate grants/solicitations for programs, projects, and special events as well as responsible for the monitoring of funds and presentation of reports. Candidates must have completed their education (BA degree) and minimum one year working experience in fundraising or comparable experience in other areas are required. Background in international development and/or not-for-profit organizations is preferred. Must also be available to travel frequently between Guatemala City the project, and other parts of Guatemala. A high level of Spanish required.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Develop tools to evaluate departments and programs, and then implement actions to improve on the weaknesses identified. Candidates must have training and experience working in monitoring and evaluation. A high level of Spanish required and a minimum of 6 months commitment.
  • Public Health Adviser: Help with assessment and design of projects/programs: Help implement and maintain ongoing monitoring of projects and programs. Help plan and implement trainings on different topics: heath topics, and project implementation, monitoring, evaluation, etc. Candidates must have completed their education (BA) in Public Health, preferably with 2 years of experience coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating health care programs and projects. They must have experience working in rural health and dxperience in facilitating trainings in the following themes: indigenous medicines, midwife healthcare, domestic violence awareness and prevention, and sexual health education, sanitation. Must have a high level of both Spanish and English fluency.
